Estelle’s Recap
News of the runaway concubines-to-be have gotten to the Emperor, and he wants the Four to investigate immediately. The Four are totally uninterested because obviously the murders are way more important, but their teacher Zhu Ge insists so they start on their journey to recapture these girls. No doubt this is just a ploy to get our main leads to meet!
So where’s Yin Xue? She is hiding out at her cousin’s house. While they are settling down to eat noodles, Yin Xue suddenly hears her cousin comment on how much trouble he is in despite the fact that he didn’t utter a word. The next morning, Yin Xue’s cousin finds a wanted notice posted at the market place. Hoping to catch Yin Xue and collect the reward, he leads a group of soldiers to his residence. Luckily she sees the soldiers when she climbs a tree to get a stuck kite. She heads back to her room and digs a hole in the wall, escaping just in the nick of time.
After learning that her cousin betrayed her, a depressed Yin Xue nearly commits suicide, but she catches herself before it is too late. However, Leng Xue appears out of nowhere and completely startles her, causing her to slip. Leng Xue dashes to the edge, grabs a hold of her arm and there she is, dangling at the side of the cliff.
Leng Xue recognizes her as the runaway concubine-to-be and threatens to throw her down the cliff if she does not come clean with her identity. Yin Xue is desperate for him to help her and makes all sorts of claims about how upset the Emperor would be if she dies. They also make formal introductions, all the while her life is hanging by a thread. Finally, he pulls her up and throws her in the air, but not forgetting to catch her at the other end.
Yin Xue: Wha, why are you so rough? It hurts. Don’t you know how to be gentle with women?
Leng Xue: If you aren’t someone the Emperor is looking for, I wouldn’t even bother saving you.
Yin Xue: You find me annoying? Ok, then I’ll leave —
Leng Xue: What a sharp tongue. What other tricks do you want to pull?
Yin Xue: With you, this cold blooded animal near by, what tricks could I pull?
Yin Xue: Where are we going?
Leng Xue: I’m a detective, you are a criminal, I have nothing to say to you.
Yin Xue: I’m a criminal? You detectives definitely don’t know good from evil. Those who want to bring me to the palace are the real criminals. Why don’t you arrest them?
Leng Xue: You, a concubine-to-be, instead of knowing your place, you incited others to escape with you. Are you not a criminal?
Yin Xue: You, a legendary detective, instead of doing some more important task, you are here dealing with a poor innocent woman, I feel ashamed for you!
Leng Xue: This is my responsibility.
Yin Xue tries different angles, from appealing to his sympathy to threatening suicide to begging, hoping that he would let her go, but none of it works; he just tells her “this is my responsibility.” Evntually, she gives up and begins to insult him, but this doesn’t last as she falls into a hunter’s trap.
Yin Xue takes this opportunity to ask Leng Xue to let her go – saying he can just leave her there. He surprises her by agreeing! However, he also lets her know that in a few days some tigers will probably join her in the trap, too. ^^;
Faced with no choice, she rejoins Leng Xue, but she has not given up on getting away. What’s new? She pretends that she lost a jade pendant in the trap and insists that she must go back to get it because it is given to her by the Emperor. So the two go back to the trap to look for it. She shuts the trap door when Leng Xue jumps in to look for the pendant, but like seriously, those bamboo doors are nothing for him! He easily breaks through and they regroup with the remaining members of the Four.
Poor Yin Xue, she is tied to Leng Xue’s horse and walks while the rest of them ride comfortably. They soon meet up a farmer pulling a pig in a crate. Leng Xue puts her in the crate with the stinky pig. C’mon guys, I thought you were gentlemen!
After some time, they arrive at the city and run into a group of soldiers and the other escaped girls. Some of the onlookers comment that all these girls are going to be sent to the mausoleum and they won’t be able to come back ever again. The worst is for a girl who was found to be with her lover – the couple will be beheaded instead.
Upon finding out the fate of the escaped girls, the Four contemplate over a meal whether to turn Yin Xue in or not. Well, I shouldn’t say all four because Leng Xue remains unmoved. He insists that they must remain loyal to their duties and to the Emperor.
Yin Xue is still looking for a way to escape, but alas, Leng Xue is everywhere and she just cannot outsmart him. So what does she resort to? Throwing a tantrum inside the room, even going as far as hanging some fabric over the beam to fake suicide. The three more sympathetic detectives rush in and “save” her. They begin to ponder whether they need to bring her to the palace. She takes this opportunity to gain more in her favor by crying and wailing. Wu Qing suggests taking Yin Xue’s identification card and lie to the Emperor, saying that she fell off the cliff. Tie Shou and Zhui Ming chime in, expressing their support for the idea as well. At long last, Leng Xue relents and decides to go with the plan.
In order to solve the problem of Yin Xue having no where to go, the Four decides to hide her in Shen Hou Fu as a maid. To avoid having people find out her true identity, she comes up with a new name, Chu Li Mo, which is from a poem she read with her mom.
