Estelle’s Recap

Well, so how did Gong Ming suddenly turn up? We learn all about that now in this episode. After being ambushed by the Wang family’s men, he vanishes to 2015 again. And also, he nearly gets hit by a car yet AGAIN. Oh man, these streets are NOT friendly to poor Gong Ming.

He walks into some theater and watches a hip hop dance rehearsal (they played Bruno Mars’ Uptown Funk. Up to date, aren’t we!). Anyway, Gong Ming takes this chance to pick up some of the clothes the crew left in the back. Oh, but our righteous Gong Ming would never steal. No, he leaves a bunch of old Han coins on the table for them.

Gong Ming walks by a fountain and interrupts a lovey dovey couple to ask where he is. Later he sits down on a bench to observe people using the information center. The center’s guide thinks he is into her and even calls up her friend to share her excitement. But her heart is about to get broken as Gong Ming walks up to borrow her phone. -.-;;

So this is how homeboy got a phone to call Xiang Xiang! He tells her he is in Hangzhou (dude, it’s a pretty big place!).

Xiang Xiang immediately looks up the flight info for Hangzhou, but not before she gets caught by Jing Jie. Xiao Nan comes to her rescue and pretends that they are going to see his friend. Though suspicious, Jing Jie reluctantly believes them. Yu Fei catches wind of Xiang Xiang’s plans and decides that he will go as well, even relocating his magazine interview to there.

After successfully sending Jing Jie and Xiao Nan off on a shopping adventure, Xiang Xiang starts to teach Gong Ming various modern life skills, such as the different monetary values, ordering beverages in a cafe, calling a taxi etc..

Xiang Xiang: Impressive! You learnt Arabic numbers and mathematical calculations so quickly. It is really true that our ancestors are smarter than us.
Gong Ming: Perhaps. I’ve been good at calculations since birth.
Xiang Xiang: OK! Xue ba 学霸 (someone who is really good in academics)! You got all cocky from one compliment.
Gong Ming: What I’ve said, it is the complete truth.
Xiang Xiang: “what I’ve said, it is the complete truth.” Are you afraid others don’t know you are from the past?
Gong Ming: Are you mocking me? Alright, I only know because of Teacher Xiang Xiang.
Xiang Xiang: Of course. Great teachers produce great students.

Next, Xiang Xiang films a lover’s quarrel and assumes the man is a cheating two timer. Gong Ming says even if that’s the case the girl’s behavior is a bit too much. Xiang Xiang comes to the girl’s defense and confesses that if she is that girl she would be even worse. Gong Ming tells Xiang Xiang that this is not how Empress Xu would act; she would be much more gentle and elegant. This gets Xiang Xiang a little upset, and she scolds him for being old fashioned. He quickly apologizes and shakes her hand. LOL.

Xiang Xiang takes Gong Ming to the mall and Gong Ming stops in front of the word ‘love.” He confesses that he doesn’t recognize a lot of words now and Xiang Xiang explains that it because modern folks read simplified Chinese, not traditional. Gong Ming admits simplicity is nice, but it is sad that the character for heart is omitted from the simplified version of the word love. Awwwwww! That’s ‘cuz your love’s got heart! We know, Gong Ming, we know.

The couple continues shopping (can I call them a couple yet?) and guess who is not far behind? Yu Fei! He is missing Xiang Xiang terribly and when he walks by the jewelry counter he thinks of the time when he came with Xiang Xiang to pick a …ring?

Luckily Xiang Xiang does not bump into Yu Fei. Phew! She is in a restaurant with Gong Ming. While at the table, she pretend dials and Gong Ming picks up.

Gong Ming: Hello?
Xiang Xiang: Hello?
Gong Ming: It is me, Gong Ming.
Xiang Xiang: It is me, Xiang Xiang.
ltm_13 Gong Ming: Miss Xiang Xiang.
Xiang Xiang: Mister Gong Ming.
Gong Ming: Miss Xiang Xiang.
Xiang Xiang: You can just call me Xiang Xiang.
Gong Ming: Xiang Xiang.
Xiang Xiang: You are back safely. Did you get injured?
Gong Ming: Thanks to you, I’m fine.
ltm_14 Xiang Xiang: Good. I was worried for you.
Gong Ming: Thanks. Last time, you also said you were worried for me.
Xiang Xiang: I did say that.
Gong Ming: But, why were you worried?

Before we could get an answer, the waiter brings over their food and Xiang Xiang hangs up. Xiang Xiang explains the dish – dong po rou – as her favorite and how it is created by the poet Su Dong Po when he was in exile. Gong Ming acknowledges her special message.

Back in 16 B.C., the Wang family is celebrating the success of their plans so far, especially since Zhao Yan Fei will become Empress soon enough. Wang Mang is surprised to hear that there’s an order out to kill Gong Ming. He dashes out the door in anger and once again remembers back to his time with his bff.

Cue flashback! Wang Mang and Gong Ming want to go out to play instead of finishing their poetry assignment. So they call in Ying Yue who has been assigned to watch them to check their work. While she is reading, they sneak out the door. The poem, by the way, is about dogs chewing on bones…

Ying Yue realizes the scheme and runs after them. Finally, the boys are tired and fall onto the ground. Ying Yue scolds them and they just recite the poem back to her. -.-” boys will be boys?

Cute days may be over for Wang Mang, but they have just begun for Gong Ming! After dinner, Xiang Xiang takes him to watch an Adam Sandler movie (blech) and she points out different things to him, especially the romantic confession. She gets super into a love making scene which makes Gong Ming uncomfortable. He leans over to ask Xiang Xiang if girls in modern times are all into that. Xiang Xiang diffuses the situation by offering him popcorn, but they get scared by a loud crash from the movie and drop their food all over the place.

After the movie, Gong Ming tells her that he saw a clip of her earlier. Xiang Xiang fishes for compliments and he admits that she is very beautiful in the Han attaire. Upon hearing this she nearly trips, but Gong Ming catches her just in time! Xiang Xiang lies that it is too dark when in fact it is like super bright out with all these neon lights. Anyway, he says it’s not too bad because there are stars around. Uh… you can’t see stars in city skies!

Xiang Xiang asks him about his birthday which is March 24. She figures that he is a Taurus. She tells him that it is very fitting because he is stubborn, conservative and stiff. He complains that it doesn’t sound too good and she quickly explains that Taurus are also responsible, cautious, patient and loyal.

Did Gong Ming pick up some tips from the movie? Xiang Xiang mentions that it is a bit cold and Gong Ming reaches over to hug her.

Nooooo! Things are put to an end way too soon when Xiang Xiang gets a phone call from Xiao Nan asking her to rush home. She starts walking and Gong Ming catches up to her to hold her hand from behind. Theheheeh. Look! Their fingers are even intertwined! Boy’s got game!!!

Once they return home, Xiang Xiang finds Xiao Nan and Jing Jie already fast asleep on the same bed. So she lays out some sheets for Gong Ming on the sofa. He tries to talk about what happened before, but she walks away briskly to avoid any conversation. Girl, he basically just confessed his feelings to you. Let the man do his thing!

The next day at the airport is super awkward. Xiang Xiang notices some tension between Jing Jie and Xiao Nan, but Jing Jie denies anything has happened. Uh, did you FORGET that you force kissed Xiao Nan the night before? Yes, it did happen.

Guess who sees them? Yu Fei calls over a bunch of airport security guards to catch Gong Ming because he still thinks Gong Ming is a stalker/weirdo. Xiang Xiang steps up and announces in front of everyone that Gong Ming is her boyfriend. Oh man! Explosive news everyone!!!
