Quietness is the music of farewell.
Previously on YAMS… episode 12 recap
Yuan Feng takes Yi Mei out for sushi and enthuse over raw fish, but Yi Mei states that she actually doesn’t eat any uncooked seafood. Just then Xiao Xiao calls to ask him for the pictures he took, but he tells her he will send them to her later because he is out having dinner with his girlfriend. As they are about to return to eating, Yi Mei gets a call from Lawyer Yuan informing her that Yi Chen is sick with gastrorrhagia (stomach bleeding) in the hospital.
While at work, Mo Sheng gets a call from Xiang Heng asking to meet up. He tells Mo Sheng about the time in college when they betted on who will become Yi Chen’s girlfriend. Usually Yi Chen doesn’t participate in this game but this time (after he came back from the debate competition) he joins in and bets on Mo Sheng. Apparently that’s the first time everyone heard of her name.
Xiang Heng continues to say they had always imagined that Yi Chen’s girlfriend would be calm and mature, but she was completely different. He confesses that at first he didn’t think Mo Sheng would be suitable, but after a while he felt like Yi Chen was becoming more like a twenty year old than before. Xiang Heng remembers fondly a time when Yi Chen did everyone’s laundry on his birthday.
Xiang Heng confronts Mo Sheng about her intentions and warns her to not be so selfish. He gives her the address of Yi Chen’s hospital and lets her know that he is sick from overworking.
At the hospital, Yi Mei wonders if Mo Sheng really means that much to Yi Chen. She promises to herself that she will help them get back together if Mo Sheng is the only person Yi Chen wants. She thinks to herself that this is what she owes them anyway. Awww, Yi Mei!
Yi Mei exits the room and bumps into Mo Sheng. She goes to Yi Chen’s residence to pick up a change of clothes and Mo Sheng follows. Yi Mei takes this opportunity to clear the air with Mo Sheng and rebuild their friendship.
Yi Mei: Of course, there’s nothing in the fridge. He must be the worst at taking care of himself. Last time I was here he was eating ramen.
Mo Sheng: That’s why for people like him the best method is to not eat if he won’t eat.
Yi Mei: That’s why I’m not as good as you are. All I thought of was to take him to the supermarket from time to time.
Yi Mei: Mo Sheng, I was young before and didn’t know better. Now I know, some things you can’t fight for. I’ve given up on Yi Chen.
Mo Sheng: Why?
Yi Mei: Probably because I can’t out wait him. He can wait one year and another continuously even when there is no hope, but I can’t. Three to four years ago, he won a big case and he got drunk during the celebration. I took him home and he suddenly grabbed me and asked “why won’t you come back? I’m ready to dump everything, why won’t you come back still?”
Yi Mei walks to Yi Chen’s bookshelf, pulls out a book to show Mo Sheng. Inside the cover it reads, “quietness is the music of farewell/silence is Cambridge tonight,” which is the phrase Mo Sheng’s name came from. Yi Mei says there are more than one book with this written on it. This phrase is from famous Chinese poet Xu Zhi Mo’s poem “Saying Goodbye to Cambridge Again” in which he describes expressing farewell to Cambridge (in UK) where he studied and felt great gratitude towards. He died three years later in an airplane crash.
Yi Mei and Mo Sheng go back to the hospital together. Mo Sheng asks how did Yi Chen’s parents die, and Yi Mei replies that she actually doesn’t know much about it. What she heard from her mom is that Yi Chen’s father committed suicide by jumping off a building and his mother died not soon after, possibly from not taking her meds. Yi Mei laments that Yi Chen’s mom must have really loved his dad, and that Yi Chen is quite like his mom.
The pair arrives at the door and Yi Mei hands over all the stuff for Mo Sheng to bring inside. She makes a final comment that she didn’t lose to Mo Sheng, but she lost to Yi Chen.
Mo Sheng enters the room and starts to cry, wondering why did he wait for her because they can no longer go back to the way they were.
Of course, he wakes up! She pulls away from his grasp and dashes out the room. Yi Chen calls after her and even tries to get out of his bed but he couldn’t.
Workaholic Yi Chen doesn’t learn from his mistakes and goes back to work immediately after being released from the hospital. Xiang Heng questions why Yi Chen is already back at work, isn’t he afraid of dying? He then asks if Mo Sheng dropped by. Yi Chen thanks Xiang Heng for helping to put a stop to his one sided love. Yikes.
Yi Mei finally decides to take the soup she made to Yi Chen after thinking real hard, but she bumps into Yuan Feng. He reminds her that they have a date that night and when he sees the soup he automatically understands it as soup for him. Yuan Feng opens the tumbler and comments that it’s actually his favorite soup – ribs and wood ear! Yi Mei tries to get the soup back by saying it’s probably cold by now but Yuan Feng insists on drinking it so there he goes!
Meanwhile, Mo Sheng suddenly realizes that she cannot hide from Yi Chen because there will be no place without him. She waits in front of his door, and when he arrives, he ignores her, but luckily she is able to grab a hold of his sleeve.
Mo Sheng: Do you still want me?
Yi Chen: Let go of your hand.
Worthy of Note:
- Yi Mei counts a time Yi Chen once told Mo Sheng to be careful running while its raining as one of the moments Yi Chen showed an early sign of where his heart is.
- Yi Chen tells his assistant to block all calls from Treasure.
- Yi Mei visits Yi Chen at the hospital, but finds out that he has already left. Her first reaction is to call him, but then decides against it. Yes, let him go.
- Yuan Feng’s parents warn him against dating models; they even list Xiao Xiao as an example of someone who is “unclean.” Yuan Feng promises them that he will not and that Xiao Xiao is actually innocent. Hmmmmmm…
