Anna’s Recap
It doesn’t seem appropriate for me to be saying, “I told you so,” but Team Qiao Ran forever! In all seriousness, we all knew that Chen Xun wasn’t the guy for Fang Hui, but we just didn’t know what a complete jerkface he is. I was never a Chen Xun fan, and this episode just confirmed that I was right not to be. Don’t be too sad, Fang Hui, because it’s better that you got rid of this loser now rather than later. Good riddance, I say!
Fang Hui is in a total daze after seeing Chen Xun with Xiao Tang, and she knows that there’s something going on between them. She accidentally steps off the curb and twists her ankle. Her first instinct is to take out her phone to call Chen Xun, but then she remembers that is no longer an option. Poor girl is left crying on the street curb with no one to help her.
When she sees Jia Mo the next day, Fang Hui tells her that she can’t help her look for Zhao Ye these next few days. Jia Mo asks where Chen Xun is, but she can immediately tell by the look on Fang Hui’s face that something’s wrong. Fang Hui says that she thinks that they are about to break up soon.
Jia Mo calls Chen Xun to tell him about Fang Hui, and he immediately rushes over to find her. He finds her walking out of the school to go back home. Chen Xun asks her why she didn’t tell him that she was hurt, and Fang Hui says that she did call him. He claims that he saw the missed call, but she didn’t pick up when he called back. All she has to say to him before leaving is that he could have called her dorm to find her. Damn. You feel that chill?
Chen Xun’s going around being emo for the rest of the day, and finally leaves the dorm to go hang out in a tunnel(?). At least I think that’s what it is. He befriends a street performer there and jams with him for awhile on his guitar. After the guy leaves, Chen Xun sees Xiao Tang walk over to him. How did she find him there?! After singing a couple of silly songs, he sings a real one, per Xiao Tang’s request. The tunnel is empty at the moment, and she sits down next to him to harmonize. Stop it! It’s too romantic!
All those romantic feelings in the air caused the inevitable to happen…Chen Xun and Xiao Tang kiss. I honestly don’t know who’s more at fault here. BOTH.
The next day, Xiao Tang is acting like nothing happened and sits down with Chen Xun in the dining hall. She talks about random crap with him, but Chen Xun is not interested one bit. Then when Chen Xun is practicing “Cong Cong Na Nian” for the singing competition, Xiao Tang joins in and sings along with him! OH. HELL. NO. Chen Xun immediately stops singing. Xiao Tang apparently doesn’t get the hind because she asks him to teach her the guitar chords for the song. Ughhh.
Jia Mo later sees Chen Xun drop off Xiao Tang, and asks him if she’s the infamous Shen Xiao Tang. When he doesn’t answer her question about whether or not he likes her, Jia Mo asks what he plans to do about Fang Hui. As if he couldn’t be more of a dick than he already is, Chen Xun tells Jia Mo that he’ll just talk to Fang Hui about it and that he’s not feeling great about the situation either. F U, Chen Xun. Jia Mo angrily asks him if he has forgotten what he carved into that tree (“We’ll be together forever.”). She asks him if he’s really planning on giving up their entire group of friends for one Shen Xiao Tang. And the only thing he says in response is sorry. Seriously?! God, I hate this guy so much right now.
Fang Hui is telling Chen Xun about her father recently visiting her. When she talks how she still has unresolved issues with him, Chen Xun suggests that maybe her dad had a legitimate reason for abandoning her and her mom. Fang Hui replies that the only reason why a person would leave another person is because there’s not enough love. And when they regret it later, it will already be too late. You listening, Chen Xun?
Right before the start of the singing competition, Xiao Tang comes up to Chen Xun to find out what he’s singing. When he says “Cong Cong Na Nian,” she asks if the song was written specifically for Fang Hui. He nods, and Xiao Tang then asks if she can sing it with him. WHAT. She claims that if there has to be one bad person if all of this, she wishes that she can be it. Ugh…does she not realize that she already is?! She can save all that noble bullcrap of hers.
Perhaps in one last attempt to save their relationship, Fang Hui comes to see Chen Xun sing at the competition. She’s touched and happy to see that he’s singing their song, but then immediately gets a rude awakening when she sees Xiao Tang join him onstage. Fang Hui’s face completely falls and the tears come streaming. She drops the flowers she brought with her, and leaves the auditorium.
Afterwards, Chen Xun sees Fang Hui calling his phone, and he hesitates to answer. The first thing she says when he does pick up is that she has a question to ask him, and he only needs to respond with “yes” or “no.” She asks him if he likes Shen Xiao Tang, and he responlds yes. Fang Hui says okay and tells Chen Xun to remember that they have just had their last moment together. And from this moment forward, she is no longer his girlfriend because they’ve just broken up. Good for you, Fang Hui! Dump his cheatin’ ass.
Chen Xun immediately rushes out of the building to find Fang Hui, but as destiny would have it, he runs in the opposite direction of her. As Chen Xun and Fang Hui are literally going their separate ways, Fang Hui thinks back to all those empty promises that Chen Xun made to her. Yeah, so much for his grand declaration that he’ll never let her be alone. Damn you, Chen Xun!
Fang Hui makes her way to their high school and the tree where Chen Xun carved in those words. Meanwhile, Chen Xun is running around like a madman in the streets, looking for her. When Jia Mo finally finds Fang Hui at the high school, Fang Hui tells her that she still loves him, but why doesn’t he love her anymore? Jia Mo says that he’s changed. Fang Hui says that Chen Xun once told her that he will never apologize to her, but he suddenly said it so many times to her. Jia Mo gives her the harsh but necessary reality check that there’s nothing left between her and Chen Xun.
Fang Hui’s voiceover says that when boys make promises, they believe that they will never break them. And when they regret those promises, it’s because they really don’t think that they can keep them. Vows cannot determine right or wrong, but can only prove that in the moment, they both believed it.
As Fang Hui is walking by herself on campus, someone with a suitcase in hand calls out to her. She turns around, already knowing who it is, and sees Qiao Ran. He stands there looking like the amazing and wonderful person that he is. Upon seeing him, Fang Hui gets emotional because in one of her lowest moments, her friend is finally back.
Qiao Ran is back! Qiao Ran is back! QIAO RAN!
Extra Credit:
When Chen Xun doesn’t say anything about their kiss the next day, Xiao Tang has the nerve to be upset about it. If she’s gunna make out with a guy who has a girlfriend, she shouldn’t be crying about it.
Fang Hui’s estranged father visits her because he wanted to see her before moving to Australia. He hadn’t shown his face for five years, and swings by to say that he doesn’t know when he’ll be back. Jeez.
Jia Mo had previously gone to Zhao Ye’s workplace (a nightclub) to find him, and left her dorm’s address and phone number for him. Zhao Ye goes to the school to find her, but Jia Mo’s currently preoccupied with Song Ling’s latest love confession. Zhao Ye joins the crowd to watch, and he hears Song Ling’s confession to her. Disappointed, he leaves before hearing Jia Mo reply that she has already given her heart to someone else. Come back, Zhao Ye!
