Sending them off to college.
Previously on Back in Time/Cong Cong Na Nian… ep 10 recap
Goodbye high school, hello college. I’m always really skeptical of dramas or TV shows that transition their characters from high school to college. For some reason, the college years in dramas always suck in comparison. Since it was pretty obvious from the very first episode that this drama isn’t going to have a completely satisfactory ending, that trend will probably continue here too. Not even a semester into college, and things are already getting way too messy. Sigh.
Chen Xun and Fang Hui finally proved their haters wrong by getting into the same college. On move-in day, Chen Xun seems to be getting along quite well with his new roommates. One of them, Song Ling, is pretty damn annoying though. Yeah, I’m not a fan. Fang Hui, on the other hand, isn’t winning any of her roommates over. It also didn’t help that she ditched them right in the middle of their roommate bonding time to go hang out with Chen Xun. Like, she legit ran out of there without saying a word.
Jia Mo is apparently at the same college as Chen Xun and Fang Hui. Did all three of them get into Tsinghua or is this some other school? So confused. She’s still worried about the incarcerated Zhao Ye, so Fang Hui suggests that they go visit him in prison in a couple of days. But when they go there, the prison’s visiting times for that month have already passed and there’s no way that they can see him.
At their mandatory military training, Chen Xun and Song Ling, are busy goofing off but only Chen Xun gets in trouble for it. Ugh, really not liking his roomie. Turns out that his punishment is to just stand around. C’mon, that’s way too chill. While he’s standing there, he notices the girl next to him and she looks like she’s sleeping while standing up. She opens his eyes and catches him staring. She introduces herself as Shen Xiao Tang, and tells him that she got punished for sneaking in a phone. She asks him to lend her his phone tomorrow because she knows he’s got one. So flirty!
The next day, Chen Xun follows through by lending Xiao Tang his phone. Apparently her urgent call was to her mom to find her Nirvana CD. Hearing this, Chen Xun is all intrigued that this girl would also listen to Nirvana’s music. Those sparks are flying! He asks her how she knew that he was hiding a phone, and Xiao Tang tells him that she was just guessing when she said it. Chen Xun watches her as she runs away. Hmmm, Xiao Tang’s coolness definitely stands in stark contrast to Fang Hui’s timidity.
All the male cadets are lining up outside of the bathrooms, waiting for the girls to leave theirs, so that they can use the showers. When Fang Hui comes out of the bathroom, Chen Xun sees her and excitedly waves to her. Song Ling asks him if that’s, “Mrs. Chen, ” and Chen Xun tells him of course. When Xiao Tang is coming out, she also sees Chen Xun and waves to him. Su Ling asks him what exactly is his deal, and how many “wives” has he got out there. He tells him that there’s only one out there for him. Sure, for now maybe.
Done with military training, it’s back to usual for everyone. When Fang Hui is walking around campus with her roommates, she’s too busy checking her phone to be part of the convo. But her ears perk up when she hears them talking about how Chen Xun is the most eligible guy in their class. One of the girls says that someone like him must have a girlfriend already, and it’s probably someone who’s super gorgeous. They just so happen to run into Chen Xun and Jia Mo, and Fang Hui goes right over to him and holds his hand. In yo face, mean girls, in yo face.
When Fang Hui is cleaning the dorm later that day, she accidentally knocks over her roommate’s plant and the girl absolutely flips the crap out. She accuses Fang Hui of doing it on purpose because that’s her lucky plant and Fang Hui must not want anyone else but herself to have good luck. Fang Hui just runs out of the room instead of defending herself or resolving it. Looks like they could really use some roommate mediation with their RA.
Fang Hui finds Chen Xun after the fight, and tells him that she’s thinking about moving back home. He laughs at how dramatic she’s being and tells her that she’s just overreacting. He says some lame joke to make her laugh, and this apparently put them both in the mood because they just start making out. When Chen Xun’s hand kind of starts wandering, Fang Hui immediately puts a stop to it. I think it goes without saying that it was MAD AWKWARD.
In the dining hall, Chen Xun runs into Xiao Tang and joins her for dinner. When he’s helping her open a jar of hot sauce, she notices his Nike Basketball Competition keychain. You remember the competition from a couple episodes ago? Xiao Tang tells him that her school was the runner-up in that competition, and asks what high school he went to. He responds that he’s from the high school that defeated hers and straight-up won the competition. When Xiao Tang hears that he’s the one who won the competition for his school, she is like SO impressed.
Chen Xun walks into his dorm to see his roommates spying on the girls’ dorm with binoculars. Not cool! Song Ling complains when Chen Xun snatches the binoculars to take a look himself because he already has a girlfriend. Chen Xun tells him that that’s exactly who he’s looking for. But when he looks, the first person he sees isn’t Fang Hui but Xiao Tang. He immediately puts down the binoculars and gets all awkward about it.
Chen Xun organizes a dinner with his roommates to properly introduce Fang Hui to them. Fang Hui also invited Jia Mo to join them. Unbeknownst to everyone there, Jia Mo and Song Ling have already met and immediately disliked each other. The group plays a card game, and everyone teams up to make Song Ling lose. No complaints from me, the dude is super annoying!
For some reason, Song Ling decides that he’s going to pursue Jia Mo. He pretty much ambushes her when she’s walking to class, and she does not look pleased at all to be seeing him. He gives her a lunchbox full of pork buns, and tells her that he’s going to bring lunch to her daily. Song Ling tells her that he’s declaring right here that he likes her and is going to pursue her. Jia Mo tells him that she too is declaring right here that she doesn’t like him. He doesn’t care though because he’s sure that she’ll fall in love with him.
Chen Xun and Fang Hui are having a date night at his house. Obviously the movie they’re watching quickly gets ignored because they’re way too busy making out on the couch. But once again, right when things are getting hot and heavy, Fang Hui makes him stop. She tells him that she’s not ready yet, and they’ll be able to do whatever they want when they get married. Chen Xun’s immediate reaction is to ask her if they have to wait until they’re married. Fang Hui tells him that she doesn’t think it’s a good idea for them to be having sex now, and wants to wait for the right time to do it.
Fang Hui asks him if he’s angry with her, and he says no…but his face says otherwise. She tells him that ever since they got to college, he’s changed quite a bit. Chen Xun doesn’t think there’s anything wrong with a little change. Omg so much foreshadowing here, right?! She asks him if it’ll be alright if they took things slowly, and he agrees to it. Fang Hui’s voiceover later says that when they were young, they’d be curious but scared about the things that they didn’t know about. Because of this conflict, they would often miss out on important experiences and people.
Song Ling tells Chen Xun that he’s really stressed out about how to win over Jia Mo. Chen Xun tells him to not even think about it because one of his bros really likes her. Yeah, get smart and back the hell off, Song Ling. Zhao Ye ftw!
Fang Hui isn’t picking up Chen Xun’s calls, so he’s just bumming out by himself in the dorm room. When the phone rings, he leaps up thinking that it’s Fang Hui calling. Instead, it’s Xiao Tang. Oh boy…
Jia Mo first met Song Ling at the cafeteria when they were both waiting in line for food. He was in front of her and took all the good stuff for himself. When she confronted him about it, he was pretty much the opposite of a gentleman and refuses to put down some food or apologize.
During the August Moon celebration at the military training, Chen Xun performs a cover of Zhen Jun’s, “Cinderella,” for everyone. Everyone is really digging his performance, including Xiao Tang.
Chen Xun invites Fang Hui to go on a day trip with his roommates, but she has already agreed to go to Thailand with her mom. Chen Xun tells her that it’s no problem, but he’s so definitely lying. Still, he promises to write her a letter every day.
